Today you will be reading the short story "Thank you m'am" by Langston Hughes in the red anthology The Language of Literature (page 30).  Link to audio. Answer the comprehension questions.

“Thank You Ma'am” Comprehension Questions
Answer the following questions.

Prompt:  In 2014, 17 year-old Malala Yousafzai won the Nobel Peace Prize, making her the youngest winner in history.  For such a young person to win such a prestigious award was amazing, yet for those who knew her story, it was no great surprise.  What factors/ traits were influential in Malala’s success? That is, what personality traits and/ or influences helped her succeed in becoming one of the most famous and successful activists in the world?
You will write a five paragraph informational/ explanatory essay that uses your knowledge of Malala’s story to pick three traits/ influences that you can prove were influential.

A successful essay includes:

  • A strong thesis with a forecast
  • Body paragraphs with multiple pieces of evidence, and sufficient reasoning
  • Transitions, both inside of paragraphs and between paragraphs
  • A conclusion that rephrases the thesis and has an outro that ties back to the hook
  • Capitalization of all proper nouns, citations of quotes, , and other appropriate conventions
