Read the "Hook Exercise" (page 225).  Read the five types of travelers on Mansa Musa's Hajj: ferba, griot, Muslim scholar, soldier, and slave.  Complete the "Hook Exercise" (page 223), and fill in your profile sheet for your hajj persona.  Use the map of Mali in 1300 to choose a birthplace city:

Answer questions 1-6 on the Questions for the Background Essay.  First, write five definitions for the words on number 7.

Background Essay definitions:
caravan--a group of people with animals or vehicles who travel together for safety, especially through a desert
hajj--a journey to Mecca for religious reasons, that all Muslims try to make at least once in their life
mansa--a title meaning sultan or king
Sahara--the Arabic word for desert, an area of land which stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea
savanna--a large flat area of grassy land, especially in Africa
Allah--Muslim word for God
