Humanities 7 Leonardo_polyhedra.png2000px-Aztec_calendar.svg.png
(English/ Language Arts & History/ Social Science)

CLASSROOM RULES & EXPECTATIONS

Overview:
Through an integrated approach to English/Language Arts and History/ Social Science, Humanities 7 will help students cultivate a curiosity about the world, and build the skills needed to read, analyze, and write increasingly complex texts.  In this class, students will develop the ability to analyze literature and informational writing in terms of structure, argument and figurative language. Students will learn how to make sound inferences that allow them to read "between the lines" of what is written in serious literature and primary/ secondary sources.

Course Content:
This course will cover the the Common Core State Standards for English/Language Arts, Literacy in History/ Social Studies, as well as the California state Social Studies standards.  The focus of the course is on Medieval/ Early Modern World history and literature, from the Fall of Rome to the Age of Exploration, roughly 500 C.E. to 1789 C.E.. Literature studied will include The Giver, Beowulf, and I Am Malala,  but we will also read numerous smaller selections from larger sources, including the Koran as well as Reformation, Renaissance, and Enlightenment thinkers. Additionally, students will participate in and lead Literature Circles and Socratic Seminars, where they will be responsible for leading discussions on shared texts.
Writing will focus on narrative (1st quarter), informational/ explanatory (2nd quarter), and argumentative (3rd/4th quarters).  Vocabulary will be studied and assessed frequently, with an emphasis on academic vocabulary, content specific vocabulary, and vocabulary roots. Grammar will be interspersed throughout the year, with a focus on sentence structure and punctuation.
Informal and formal research will be on-going.  Students will learn how to incorporate multiple sources, avoid plagiarism, and cite information accurately.

Expectations:
  1. Do your best work.
  2. Be safe.
  3. Use technology appropriately.
  4. Be a positive role model at LOMS.
  5. Come prepared.
6.        Check Ms. Brooke’s website and Powerschool frequently.

Absences:
Students who miss class are responsible for making up all work that they miss.  It’s the responsibility of the student to find out what they missed by asking their homework buddy.  If you are out for one day, work will be accepted (with no points off) one day late. If you are three days, work will be due three days later.  If you miss a quiz or test, you will need to schedule a time to retake the quiz or test.

Restorative Approach to Discipline:
The goal at Los Osos Middle School is to create an environment where everyone is respectful and responsible.  If anyone is not respectful or responsible, the goal is to “train proper conduct,” which emphasizes positive behavior and choices.   Students will be aware of the consequences for disrespectful or irresponsible behavior, and will take ownership of their actions.

Consequences:
1st  Offense        Warning/ re-direction
2nd Offense   Move to reflection area/ reflect on behavior/ possible parent contact
3rd  Offense           Removal to partner teacher/ 2nd reflection/ parent contact
4th  Offense Formal conference request/ parent contact
5th  Offense Administrative conference/ parent contact
6th Offense Administrative consequence/ parent contact

Plagiarism/ Cheating
Academic honesty is essential to success.  If a student commits plagiarism, that is, the taking of someone else’s work or ideas and passing it off as one’s own, s/he will receive a zero on the assignment. If plagiarism occurs a second time, a conference will be called with the principal and parents to discuss further penalties.  The penalties are the same for cheating, including letting students copy work.
Homework:
In Humanities, homework will usually be 30 minutes of independent reading (per night, 4 times per week), and recording information on a Reading Log.  Students will demonstrate understanding related to their reading in book group, and by completing a project/ report. In addition, students will typically have weekly vocabulary words.

Grades:
Homework is graded, as are in-class assignments, projects, quizzes and tests.  Grades are given in terms of points, with smaller assignments worth fewer points. Progress Report, Quarter, and Semester grades are letter grades.
90-100%= A 80-89%= B 70-79%=C 60-69%= D Below 60%= F.

In addition to academic performance, students will be graded in terms of work habits and conduct. Work habits and conduct grades are in given using the following scale:
O=Outstanding S= Satisfactory N= Needs Improvement U=Unacceptable

Technology:We are 1:1 with students using Chromebooks.

Recommended Materials:
  • binder with dividers or folders
  • composition notebook
  • Paper and pencils
  • highlighters
  • Earbuds/ headphones
  • Independent reading book
  • Student textbooks can be left at home, as we have class sets to use in class.
