Today we will begin a new DBQ "Why Did Christianity Take Hold in the Ancient World?" Before beginning the questions on the Background Essay, write the definitions for the following terms:
Aramaic: an ancient, 3,000 year-old language, modern forms of which are still spoken today
messiah: Hebrew for "the deliverer", one who will bring peace to the kingdom of Israel
apostles: followers of Jesus who spread his word
New Testament: the second "half" of the Christian Bible, which deals with the life and teachings of Christ. The separates it from the Old Testament, which contains the old Hebrew scriptures.
gospels: In old English, gospel means "good news". The first four books of the New Testament are referred to as the four gospels.  Three of these--Matthew, Mark, and Luke--are closely linked.  John is quite different.  The authorship of the four gospels is unknown, the gospel names being attributions, not the actual names of the authors.
converts: people who change their beliefs, in this case, to Christianity.
After you have written the definitions, answer the four questions (in complete sentences).
Then, we will review chapter 2 "A Hall Full of Blood" and make our own Heorot, with excerpts from the book.  Then, you will read chapter 3 "Ten Against Grendel" and answer the comprehension questions.
